A lot of games shared the spotlight during this year’s Game Awards, and among them was Ori and the Will of the Wisps. The sequel to 2015’s excellent Ori and the Blind Forest, Ori and the Will of the Wisps was originally set for release sometime this year, but was eventually pushed back to February 11th, 2020. Unfortunately, Ori and the Will of the Wisps has been delayed again, but this time, the delay is a small one.
According to the trailer that debuted at The 2019 Game Awards, Ori and the Will of the Wisps has a new release date of March 11, 2020. Over on Xbox Wire, Xbox Game Studios senior producer Daniel Smith explains that this delay was made was so that Microsoft and Moon Studios have “extra time to ensure that Ori fans get the best gameplay experience possible.”
In the end, the delay isn’t anything massive, particularly if Ori and the Will of the Wisps winds up being as good as its predecessor. In addition to the delay, Microsoft also revealed that the collector’s edition for Ori and the Will of the Wisps is now up for pre-order at select retailers.
The collector’s edition ships with an art book for Ori and the Will of the Wisps, a “Piano Collections” soundtrack CD, a steelbook case featuring the golden feather, and an MP3 download of the original soundtrack. It also includes a copy of the game for the Xbox One, so it sounds like this collector’s edition won’t be available for the PC version.
Ori and the Will of the Wisps will be launching simultaneously for Xbox One and PC when March 11th rolls around next year. Being a first-party title from Microsoft, it’ll also be available through Xbox Game Pass on both Xbox One and PC on day one, so we wouldn’t be surprised to see many people play that way. With Ori and the Blind Forest being one of the better Metroidvania titles in recent memory, here’s hoping this extra time turns Ori and the Will of the Wisps into a worthy successor.
Story Timeline
Ori and the Will of the Wisps is the hugely anticipated follow up to Ori and the Blind Forest. This sequel is looking to take what that first game did and tighten things up and just make the game a better experience. Which is quite the task as the original game was something very special indeed.
Hello Ori
I found part of the story of the original Ori game to be pretty darn heartbreaking. Orin and the Will of the Wisps is taking Ori to a whole new level. Ori now is heading out to explore past the forest of Nibel. The reason for Ori’s quest is to find out what he really is and what his destiny is. Also, looking for the Lost Ones is a huge part of the story of the game.
WOW!!!!
One of the things that is really amazing about Ori and the Will of the Wisps is the game's presentation. Ori and the Blind Forest looks amazing, but I feel that this game, even though it is not 100 percent finished yet looks better. The game is going to be enhanced for 4K and that is something I am very, very excited about. This game makes excellent use of color and I really cannot wait to see more of the world that they have created here.
Modern Conveniences
I really have no complaints about the way that Ori and the Blind Forest played at all. However, the devs here have done a few things to make Ori and the Will of the Wisps more convenient to play. The first thing worth noting is that the game now has an autosave system which I feel is preferable over the way you would save you gave via Soul Links in the first game. Also, the progression seems a bit different this time around too. The upgrade system now makes use of shards that you collect instead of the rather basic way it was before. Again, the original Ori game was fantastic, but these couple of changes I feel could make the game a “smoother” kind of experience.
Explore
For me, the best way to describe the gameplay of Ori and the Will of the Wisps is that it is very much a Metroidvania kind of game. You will be exploring and finding new ways to expand the map as you go. It is very fun stuff and for fans of games of this type, it looks to have everything you would want. On the flip side of this though I must say that I do not think this is a game that will sway those of you who are not really into games of this style.
I really could not be any more excited for Ori and the Will of the Wisps. The original game set the groundwork for something amazing and this one looks to be even better. I just hope it does not tug on my heartstrings as the first game did. Which by the way if you have still not played you need to go and do it right now.
